Expressions of Interest for Panels, EASR Conference, 18-22 September 2011

The International Society for the Study of New Religions (ISSNR), which puts out the International Journal for the Study of New Religions (published by Equinox, London) is convening a series of panels at the 2011 European Association for the Study of Religion Conference in Budapest, from 18-22 September. The theme of the series is:

Challenging Approaches to New Religions/Spiritualities: Experiences from the Field

These panels will consider problems inherent in current approaches to new religions and spiritualities (for example, the static nature of most models of the interactions between religion and popular culture, the inadequacies of certain ‘catch-all’ classificatory terms for new religions and new manifestations of old religions, and the failure to fully understand the implication of the permeable border between religion and non-religion, or between religious meaning-systems and non-religious meaning-systems). We aim to both challenge existing approaches, and to offer challenging new approaches. Papers should preferably discuss new approaches in relation to empirical research, for instance by focusing on concrete experiences of insufficiency when applying existing approaches and how such problems were (or could be) overcome by applying or developing new approaches.

Expressions of interest (title and 200 word abstract) should be sent to:
